There is No Such Thing as a Work Emergency

Work emergencies don’t exist.

For the vast majority of workers, work is not a life-or-death situation.

I have deep, deep gratitude for professionals who dedicate their lives to actual life-saving work. Medical professionals, emergency responders, people in the military…you have my immense respect and thanks for your chosen paths.

But those of us with a traditional 9–5? We aren’t saving the world. And it’s important to remember that.

The stress we feel surrounding our jobs is real.

The anxiety we experience when we mess up is real.

The pressure to keep our bosses happy and dodge the layoff list is real.

But the hard truth is that putting out every work-related fire doesn’t protect you from layoffs.

Responding to emails past 10 PM doesn’t secure your next promotion.

True change will come when organizations realize their widget isn’t saving the world
